Age Is Just a Number: What a 98-Year-Old Fitness Legend Taught Me About Never Quitting

At 98, LaLa LaLanne still does jackknives before dinner. Her secret isn't genetics—it's treating aging like a sport you train for, having a project to pursue, and refusing to quit (except when wisdom demands it)

WAKE UP! Awareness Brings Answers!

Master Your Human Edge!!

I sat with this interview longer than I expected to.

What stopped me wasn't anything flashy — it was Elaine "Lala" LaLanne, 98 years old, casually mentioning that she still does jackknives, using her kitchen table for balance since she can't touch her toes anymore but can still touch her ankles, and does it right before making dinner!

That's not a stunt.
That's just Tuesday for her!

When Joe De Sena sat down with Lala — wife of the late Jack LaLanne, the man widely credited as the godfather of modern fitness — on the Hard Way podcast, he wasn't interviewing someone who talks about discipline. He was interviewing someone who's been living it for the better part of a century.

At 98, Lala isn't coasting on her husband's legacy. She's writing books, planning Guinness World Record attempts, and drawing a line most of us never think to draw: the difference between how old you are and how old you've decided to be.

That distinction is the whole post. Here's what she taught me.

Quick Check-In: What's ONE habit your body is asking for today? Drop it on social. I read and respond to every comment—your answer might spark someone else's breakthrough!

Dramatic aerial view of helicopter over San Francisco Bay with Farallon Islands in distance, stormy skies, water skier visible below on choppy water Being towed by the helicopter, There's a line, a tow rope, from the helicopter down to the skier on the water, as they are heading towards the island, away from the camera, tension and wisdom in the scene.

🚁 The Real Story: When Wisdom Overrode Willpower

Picture this: Jack LaLanne, the fitness legend, attempting to water ski 30 miles from San Francisco to the Farallon Islands. He'd practiced. He'd hired a helicopter. Lala was in that chopper, watching her husband ski below.

Halfway there, the pilot turned to Lala and said: "There's so much wind up here that we can get to the Farallon Islands, but we can't get back."

No cell phones. No rescue nearby. Just birds and open ocean.

Lala made the call: "Turn around. Right now."

They went back. Jack never knew how close they came to disaster.

"When we think we're old, we are old. And Jack used to say aging is like a sport—you got to train for it." — LaLa LaLanne

✨ Synchronicity Check: Did that story hit you differently than you expected? That's your body signaling what it needs to hear today. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is turn around. Honor that nudge.

Watch how a 98-year-old defines "retirement" — spoiler alert: it doesn't exist.

Age is a number. Vitality is a choice. Which one are you feeding?

🙆🏼 The Core Concept: Three Ages, One Choice

Lala breaks down something most of us never consider: You have three ages.

  1. Chronological Age — The number on your license

  2. Physical Age — What your body can actually do

  3. Mental Age — How sharp, curious, and engaged your mind remains

"I don't pay attention to the chronological," she says. "I pay attention to my physical age and my mental age, and I try to keep my mental capacity in tune."

Here's the kicker: People often die of neglect, not old age.

Jack's famous line: "Aging is like a sport. You got to train for it."

Split composition showing three symbolic representations: left side shows a calendar with dates (chronological), center shows strong athletic hands gripping a dumbbell (physical), right side shows a glowing brain with neural connections lighting up (mental)

💪🏼 The Deeper Teaching: Extreme Ownership & Strategic Quitting

Jack lived by a principle that changed everything: "I only have myself to blame for what I've got myself into."

This isn't guilt. It's empowerment. When you stop passing blame and take full responsibility, you reclaim your power to change.

But here's what most "never quit" gurus won't tell you: Sometimes quitting is the smartest move you can make.

That helicopter turnaround? That was wisdom. As the saying goes: Getting to the top of the mountain is optional. Getting back down is mandatory.

Lala's rule: Look at the consequences. If pushing forward means catastrophic failure with no path back, that's not courage — that's ego.

But if you're quitting because it's hard? Because your brain is weak and wants comfort? That's a different story.

"I've written something, lost it all in a computer crash, and wanted to quit," Lala shares. "But I tell myself: If you want this job done, get your mind in gear and start over. And you'll be better the second time."

Jack proved this constantly. One-take guy, but if technical issues forced a redo? His second take was always better.

The lesson: If you quit for the wrong reasons, that quit lives forever in your brain. But if you push through, you almost never regret it.

🌟 Your Turn: Have you ever quit something you later regretted? Or pushed through and been grateful? Share your story on social. Real stories fuel real change.

🎯 An A.R.C.H to Remember

And training isn't just physical. Lala lives by what she calls her A.R.C.H. — a framework anyone can use starting today:

A — Attitude
Everything starts between your ears. Your mindset is your foundation.

R — Resistance
Twofold: Physically, resistance builds muscle. Mentally, resistance means saying no to the foods and habits that undermine your health.

C — Consistency
Showing up daily with good food, good thoughts, and good actions.

H — Harmony
When attitude, resistance, and consistency align, you achieve harmony.

👀 Solution: 5-Minute "Age Is a Sport" Audit

  1. Execute the Mindset Purge: Grab your phone notes and immediately write down every age-related limitation you've accepted — "I'm too old to start," "My metabolism is shot," "It's too late." Be ruthless. If it's a story, not a medical fact, it goes in the mental trash.

  2. Verify Your Three Ages: Check in honestly: What's your chronological age? What's your physical age (what can your body actually do today)? What's your mental age (how curious, adaptable, and engaged are you)? Write all three down.

  3. Schedule Your Project: Lala's rule: "If you want to live long, you've got to have a project. Always have something to do, someone to love, and something to look forward to." Write down YOUR project for the next 90 days. Make it specific.

  4. Engineer Your A.R.C.H.: Move your daily non-negotiables next to your morning coffee or water glass. Attitude check (gratitude or intention), Resistance (one push-up or one healthy choice), Consistency (same time daily), Harmony (one moment of stillness). Eliminate decision fatigue before 6:00 AM.

  5. Reclaim Your Narrative: Calculate the mental energy you've spent on age-related excuses. Set up an automatic daily reminder: "Aging is a sport. I train for it." Stop funding the victim story.

This isn't about denial. It's about direction!!

🌞 REAP Practical Application: Rewire the "Too Old" Script

This is how we think. This is how we move. This is how we show up!

R — Recognize & Run Out:
Notice the old thought: "I'm too old to change," or "My best days are behind me." Pause. Ask: Is that actually true, or is it a script I inherited?

E — Exchange + Envision + Emotion:
Replace it with: "Aging is a sport I train for. My mind and body respond to what I give them." Feel that shift land in your chest — capability, not limitation.

A — Activate with Action:
Run one round of REAP today on a single age-related limiting belief. Just one. Write it down. Do one jackknife, one push-up, one healthy choice — whatever your body is asking for. Celebrate finishing it — out loud. Woohoo!

P — Program & Prosper:
Repeat the reframe daily, especially inside your theta window — the first 5–10 minutes after waking, or the last 5–10 before sleep. Stack the reps. Presence becomes identity. Identity becomes reality.

🚨 Critical Window: Your 5-Minute Theta Mornings

The first 5–10 minutes after you wake up is neurological gold.

Your brain is in a more receptive theta state — the ideal window to feed your mind the input you actually want wired in, instead of whatever the group chat throws at you first.

That's why I built the 5-Minute Theta Mornings Routine: no decisions, no overthinking, just a simple practice to program your mind for strength, presence, and purpose — and it pairs directly with Step 1 of REAP: Recognize.

🤓 Today's Lesson

You cannot change your chronological age.

But you can change what it does to your future.

That's the whole game — not denial, but direction.

As Lala says: "If I stop doing it, I'll die anyway. I might as well have something to do, something to plan, and something to look forward to."

FAQ

Q: Isn't this just positive thinking with extra steps?
A: No — positive thinking skips the "why." REAP asks you to actually locate the thought behind the reaction first, then rebuild from there. Skipping the diagnosis is why most affirmations don't stick.

Q: How long before I notice a difference?
A: Meaningful shifts build over about 63 days of consistent daily practice. Expect small movement in the first week or two, not an overnight flip. But Lala's proof? At 98, she's still getting better.

Q: What if I have real physical limitations?
A: That's data, not a setback. Lala can't touch her toes anymore, so she touches her ankles. She uses a table for jackknives. Work with what you have, not what you wish you had. Jack's rule: "Do the best you can with the equipment you have."

🏖️ THE BIGGER VISION

Perfect days are engineered. One decision. One behavior. One moment of awareness at a time.

This is the mission: Awareness → REAP → Repetition → Identity → Reality

"Work on yourself. As you uplift your consciousness, you make better decisions. As you make better decisions, there are better outcomes. Those better outcomes affect you and everyone around you and uplift all of humanity. But you cannot make a high-minded decision from a low-minded place. The only way to make a higher-minded decision is to work on yourself. The greatest impact you can do for humanity is to uplift your consciousness by doing the hard personal work — the unsexy work, the boring, repetitive stuff." — Dandapani — Know Thyself podcast (interview)
