We spend a massive amount of time obsessing over what we put into our bodies. We count macros, we buy organic, we research the cleanest proteins and the most bioavailable vitamins. But in our pursuit of health, we are completely ignoring the most fundamental, powerful nutrient we consume every single day.
I'm talking about light.
Light isn't just something that lets you see; it is a biological messenger. It is the master key that unlocks your circadian rhythm, dictates your hormonal health, and literally powers your cells at a mitochondrial level.
This Fitness Friday, we're exploring the profound science of what I call "The Light Matrix."
To help us break down exactly how light acts as both a critical nutrient and a biological messenger, I've brought in an absolute master of photobiology: expert trainer and Mitolux founder, Gerardo (aka Guti).
Gerardo went from suffering the negative effects of modern indoor living to totally optimizing his biology by treating sunlight like an organic diet. 🚨 The Modern Light Epidemic: A Biological Flatline
Here's what most people don't realize: for millions of years, human biology was dictated by a massive contrast in light.
During the day, our ancestors were bathed in up to 100,000 lumens of natural sunlight, which triggered a healthy rise in cortisol to keep them alert and active. At night, they were plunged into near-total darkness (around 4 lumens from a fire or the moon), which allowed their brains to produce melatonin for deep, restorative sleep.
Today? We live in a biological flatline.
We spend our days indoors under 500-lumen artificial lights, depriving our brains of the signal to wake up. Then, we spend our nights staring at 500-lumen LED screens, tricking our brains into thinking it's high noon.
We have completely flattened our day-night cycle. And it is wreaking havoc on our sleep, our mood, and our metabolism.

🏳️🌈 The Spectrum of Life: UVA, UVB, and Infrared
When we talk about "getting some sun," we aren't just talking about one thing. Natural sunlight is a complex matrix of wavelengths, and each one has a specific, vital job in your body:
UVB (The Hormone Trigger): You know UVB produces vitamin D, but it does so much more. When UVB hits a molecule in your skin called pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), it triggers your body's internal pharmacy, producing a cascade of chemicals that regulate your entire hormonal system and mood—including serotonin.
UVA (The Nitric Oxide Booster): UVA gets a bad rap, but it is essential. When UVA light hits your skin, it releases nitric oxide into your bloodstream. Nitric oxide dilates your blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and increases blood flow. It is literally nature's pre-workout supplement.
Infrared & Red Light (The Cellular Charger): Over 50% of the sun's energy is infrared. This invisible light penetrates deep into your tissues and directly stimulates your mitochondria—the powerhouses of your cells—to produce more ATP (cellular energy).

💀 The Danger of the "Fake Sun"
Because we understand the benefits of UV light, many people turn to tanning beds. But here's the critical mistake: tanning beds are a biological trap.
In nature, UV light is always balanced by a massive dose of protective infrared. Tanning beds strip away the infrared and blast you with an unnatural ratio of UVA and UVB.
The Natural Ratio: 5% UVB, 95% UVA
The Tanning Bed Ratio: Up to 70% UVB, minimal infrared
Without the protective, healing frequency of infrared, the UV light simply stresses your skin, accelerates aging, and damages your cells.
Furthermore, modern energy-efficient windows block almost all infrared and UVB, but let UVA through. Sitting by a sunny window all day without the protective balance of the full spectrum is actually harming you.

If you still think avoiding the sun is the safest route for your health, you need to hear about this.
A landmark Swedish study followed nearly 20,000 women for approximately 10 years. Researchers set out to prove that sun avoidance would lower mortality rates by reducing skin cancer.
💥 The results were the exact opposite.
They found that women who avoided the sun had a drastically higher all-cause mortality rate. In fact, the researchers concluded that the mortality risk of avoiding the sun was comparable to the risk of smoking.
The women who got regular, natural sunlight didn't just have healthier skin; their entire biological systems were functioning optimally.

☀️ Your Morning Motivator Light Protocol
So, how do we fix this? How do we stop living in a toxic light environment and start using light as the nutrient it was meant to be?
1. Anchor Your Morning: Within the first hour of waking, get outside. Even on a cloudy day, the light intensity is enough to trigger your circadian rhythm. Look toward the sky (without staring directly at a harsh, high noon sun) and let that morning infrared and visible light signal to your brain that the day has begun.
2. Dose Your Midday Sun: Once your body is prepared by the morning light, get 15 to 30 minutes of direct midday sun on your skin. This is when you get the UVB for vitamin D and the UVA for nitric oxide.
3. Respect the Sunset: As the sun goes down, the light shifts to warm ambers and reds. This signals your brain to start winding down. Try to catch the sunset to bookend your day.
4. Reclaim Your Night: After dark, kill the overhead LEDs. Switch to warm incandescent bulbs, use candles, or wear blue-light-blocking glasses. If you must use a screen, turn it to a red/monochromatic mode. Give your brain the darkness it needs to heal.

Q: Can I get the same benefits from vitamin D supplements instead of sun?
A: No. When you get sunlight, your body produces vitamin D plus 25+ other chemicals we don't fully understand yet, plus nitric oxide from UVA, plus mitochondrial energy from infrared. Supplements only give you one piece of the puzzle.
Q: Is it safe to look at the morning sun?
A: When the sun is near the horizon (sunrise/sunset), the light intensity is greatly reduced and it's mostly infrared. This is generally safe for brief viewing and can actually nourish your eyes with the infrared they crave. Never look directly at the high noon sun.
Q: What if I live somewhere with limited sunlight?
A: You still need bright light during the day. On cloudy days, outdoor light is still stronger than indoor light. Consider full-spectrum light therapy devices that mimic natural sunlight ratios (with infrared), especially in winter months.
