Seven Invisible Patterns Sabotaging Your Success (And How to Break Free)

Mindset Monday

WAKE UP! Awareness Brings Answers!

Great Morning! Happy fresh start Monday!

Normally our Monday themes are hardcore—straight to the point, wake-the-f-up, get-your-butt-moving energy. But let's take that morning fire and look at something different today.

What if it's not about discipline right now? What if it's about connection?

I absolutely love today's expert trainer: Joe Hudson from Art of Accomplishment. For six months, Joe wrote down the exact stuck point he saw at the end of every coaching session, then sorted them. Thousands of sessions collapsed into seven categories. In this video, he walks through each one—in order. And the order matters.

Each pattern comes with a story from Joe's own life:

  • The friend who taught him the difference between dirty fuel and clean fuel

  • The day at 24 he went into the woods and learned to cry again

  • The list he wrote of everything he didn't like about himself—and what actually changed eight months later

  • The friend who wouldn't let him defend himself

After 14 years of coaching thousands of individuals, a clear trend emerges. Despite differences in background, industry, or goals, most people are stalled by the same underlying psychological patterns.

These aren't just bad habits—they're fundamental misalignments in how we approach life, work, and relationships.

👇 Quick Check-In: Which of these seven patterns do you feel most drawn to explore today? Drop it below. I read every comment—and your answer might spark someone else's breakthrough.

🔎 The Science Behind Stuck Patterns

Neuroscience reveals something profound: your brain creates neural pathways based on repeated thoughts and behaviors. What you practice, you wire. After years of repetition, these pathways become your default settings—your "patterns."

"The neural networks that fire together, wire together. But awareness creates the space to rewire." — Dr. Joe Dispenza

🔬 Science Spotlight: A 2020 study in Nature Communications found that habitual behavioral patterns are encoded in the basal ganglia, while conscious choice activates the prefrontal cortex.

Translation: Breaking patterns requires moving from autopilot to awareness. (Source: Nature Communications)

Watch Joe Hudson break down the seven patterns that hold thousands of people back—and the exact shifts that create breakthroughs. The order matters. Pay attention.

Did you notice which pattern triggered something in you? That's not random. That's your awareness pointing to where growth is ready to happen.

🗺️ The Seven Patterns Breaking Down

Pattern #1: Perfection Over Connection → Connection Over Perfection

Perfection is an unachievable metric. You've never driven perfectly. Never had a perfect conversation. Never looked perfect. Yet we chase it because we were conditioned as children to avoid criticism and bad grades.

Two hands—one reaching for a flawless crystal sphere (perfection), the other reaching toward a warm glowing connection between people (connection), symbolic contrast

The Shift: Connection is measurable. It's the sense of alignment with yourself and engagement with others. In business and life, a product or interaction that connects deeply outperforms one that is technically "perfect" but sterile.

Joe's Example: In his business, they ask: "How do we onboard people with connection? How do we create videos with connection?" Every time they prioritize connection over perfection, results improve.

🌟 Synchronicity Check: Did the word "connection" jump out at you while reading? That's not random. Your system is signaling what it needs next. Honor that nudge. Reach out to someone TODAY.

Pattern #2: Management Over Enjoyment → Enjoyment Over Management

Joe coached a 45-year-old Stanford grad, former CEO, now venture capitalist with a $30 million house who was miserable. His wife was miserable. They had everything but joy.

Joe told him: "You've been running on dirty fuel—the fuel of 'I'm not enough.' You need clean fuel: enjoyment."

The Insight: Management implies control and manipulation. When people feel managed, they resist. When they feel enjoyed, they engage. If you end your day exhausted, you used too much energy. If you end energized, you operated from enjoyment.

Try This Now: What can you do to enjoy this moment 10% more? A deep breath? A smile? A shift in posture? That small shift generates energy, perspective, and presence.

👇 Your Turn: What's ONE thing you could enjoy 10% more today? Share it below. Real commitments create real change.

A person sitting peacefully in a forest, eyes closed, tears streaming down face but expression peaceful, golden hour light filtering through trees, emotional release and clarity

Pattern #3: Figure Over Feel → Feel Over Figure

At 7 years old, Joe was crying. His parents took a picture to make fun of him and put it in the family album. At 24, flipping through that album, he saw the photo and realized: "That's probably why I haven't cried in 14 years."

For four years, he'd been trying to figure out his life—why relationships failed, what was wrong. Then he dedicated himself to learning how to cry again. No help. No guide. He went into the woods and pretended to cry until he actually cried.

The Breakthrough: When he finally let it out, clarity flooded in. Resistance dissolved. Self-talk quieted. The fight stopped.

🔬 Science Spotlight: Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio's research (published in Descartes' Error) shows that decision-making happens in the emotional center of the brain. Remove emotion, and IQ stays the same—but it takes you 30 minutes to choose a pen color. We make decisions based on how we're going to feel. (Source: Damasio, 1994)

Pattern #4: Should Over Want → Want Over Should

In his 20s, Joe lived in a shared house in Mill Valley, California. Deep in self-work, he wrote down everything he didn't like about himself. Folded it up. Forgot about it.

Eight months later, he found it. Every single thing that had changed was not something he told himself he should do—it changed naturally. Everything on the "should" list hadn't changed at all.

The Truth: "Should" is a form of shame. It says something is wrong with you as you are. Shame stagnates. It doesn't create growth.

Want, however, is an evolutionary impulse. Children develop more between ages 0-7 than any other time because they follow their wants. As we age, we judge our wants, lose touch with them, and development slows.

🌟 Synchronicity Check: What if the want that's been whispering to you is exactly what your soul is ready to pursue? Trust that pull. Take one small step toward it TODAY.

A person looking in a mirror, but the reflection shows them smiling and confident while the real person looks uncertain, symbolic of authenticity vs. self-improvement chase, soft natural lighting

Pattern #5: Self-Improvement Over Authenticity → Authenticity Over Self-Improvement

In his 20s, Joe chased "awakening" like it was a destination. He thought if he meditated enough, ate right, exercised perfectly, and held the right mindset, he'd finally "get there." He imagined he'd learn Japanese, Chinese, and Russian overnight. He wouldn't suffer anymore. He wouldn't be human anymore.

Every teacher told him: "It's not what you think. You're already there. The thing that's chasing is what you're looking for."

He couldn't hear it. Until one day, he had an awakening moment: "Oh holy crap. The thing I'm looking for is HERE."

The search dissolved. The tension vanished. Not because he had the perfect morning routine or the perfect body. But because he understood the truth about his nature. That was it.

Pattern #6: Power Over Empowerment → Empowerment Over Power

Joe's college teacher, a German man who lived through the Berlin bombings, shared this: During the war, it wasn't the "powerful" people who risked themselves for others. It was the self-possessed—those who knew who they were.

Power is external. It relies on agreement. Money has power because we all agree it does. That means it can be taken away—by markets, by public opinion, by force.

Empowerment is internal. It's knowing who you are so deeply that you remain intact regardless of circumstances. You can put Nelson Mandela in prison, make him bang rocks, underfeed him—and he remains completely empowered. It cannot be taken away.

The Application: In a relationship conflict, instead of a power struggle ("You can't tell me what to do!"), empowerment asks: "What is required for me to be fully myself and respect myself right now?" That question doesn't require the other person to change.

Two people in conversation, one with defensive crossed arms, the other with open posture and warm expression, symbolic of defense vs. love, soft natural lighting, emotional depth

Pattern #7: Defense Over Love → Love Over Defense

This is the most profound one.

Every time we defend ourselves, it's because we think there's something wrong with us. If you said "The sky is blue" and I said "No, it's purple," you wouldn't defend yourself—there's nothing wrong with you. But if you believe you're a "bad liar" and I call you a liar, you'll defend.

The Truth: Defense means you're denying some aspect of yourself. We're all liars sometimes. We're all imperfect. When you defend, you agree with the world that something is wrong with you.

Joe's Story: Sitting over Bodega Bay, orange light reflecting on the tide, his friend looked at him and said: "God, Joe, you're an asshole."

Joe's immediate reaction: "No I'm not! Why would you call me that?!"

His friend: "Just relax, Joe. I still love you. You don't have to be upset that you're an asshole. You just are. Like, are you trying to tell me you're never an asshole?"

Joe: "Oh."

In that moment, he realized: Of course I'm an asshole sometimes. Everyone is. And I can love that part of myself. I don't have to be ashamed. I don't have to defend it. I can just love it.

The Transformation: Over the next three months, the more he loved that part of himself, the less he acted like an asshole. The thing he was resisting persisted because he was resisting it. When he loved it, it transformed.

👇 Real Talk: What's one part of yourself you've been defending instead of loving? Share below if you're ready to release it. Real vulnerability fuels real connection.

💐 The Solution: Awareness Brings Answers

These seven patterns represent a shift from contraction (fear, control, shame, defense) to expansion (connection, enjoyment, feeling, wanting, authenticity, empowerment, love).

The solution isn't more effort. It's more awareness.

When you recognize the pattern, you create space. In that space, you can choose differently. Not perfectly. Just differently.

And here's where my definition of love comes in: Love is choosing the best interests of another person and acting on their behalf.

This blog, the REAP system, the consciousness community—they all exist because I believe the most loving thing I can do is bring you truth that's scientific, soulful, and actionable. When you use these tools to upgrade your life, you're acting in your own best interest. When you share this with someone who needs it, you're acting in theirs.

That's love in action.

REAP PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Your 4-Step Rewire for Breaking Patterns

R — Recognize & Run Out
Notice the pattern: "I'm trying to be perfect instead of connected."
See it. Don't judge. Ask: "Who's aware of this pattern?"

E — Exchange & Envision
Replace with: "This pattern is a signal. I can choose connection instead."
Envision yourself acting from the new pattern.

A — Activate with Action
Right now: Pick ONE pattern from today. For the next 24 hours, catch yourself every time you slip into it. Just notice. 10 seconds of awareness. That's it.

P — Program & Prosper
Repeat tomorrow. Awareness takes care of the wiring.

A diverse adult (30s, calm expression) sitting on the edge of their bed at dawn, soft golden morning light streaming through a window, wearing wireless earbuds, eyes gently closed in meditation, small journal resting on their lap showing a simplehandwritten notes

Your first 5 minutes set the tone. This is where rewiring begins.

🚨 CRITICAL WINDOW: FIRST 5 MINUTES

The REAP reps work best before the world gets its vote.

When you wake up, your brain is in theta—highly programmable. During this window, your critical faculty is offline, cortisol is rising to wake the body, and your subconscious is wide open to suggestion.

That's why what you think, say, and feel in these first 300 seconds sets the neurological tone for the entire day.

That is your window. That's why I created:

The 5-Minute Theta Mornings Routine
No decisions. No willpower. Just open, read, rewire.

FAQ (QUICK ANSWERS)

Q: How do I know which pattern to work on first?

A: The one that triggered you while reading. That's not random—your awareness is pointing to where growth is ready. Start there.

Q: Isn't this just positive thinking?

A: No. Positive thinking denies reality. Awareness includes reality while choosing a different response. One avoids. The other transforms.

Q: What if I keep falling back into old patterns?

A: You will. That's not failure—that's wiring. Each time you notice and choose differently, you weaken the old pathway and strengthen the new one. Progress isn't linear. It's spiral.

🌟 Synchronicity Spotlight

What if the pattern that called to you while reading is exactly what your consciousness is ready to rewire today? Trust that pull. Start there.

5-MINUTE MICRO-ACTION (START NOW)

  1. Breathe: 3 deep breaths. Exhale longer than inhale.

  2. Ask: "Which of the seven patterns am I running right now?"

  3. Inquire: "Who is aware of this pattern?" Rest as that presence. 10 seconds.

  4. Choose: One small action from the opposite pattern. (If perfectionism → reach out to someone. If management → enjoy something 10% more.)

  5. Commit: Say out loud: "I am awareness. I don't have to be perfect. I choose connection."

Done. One REAP rep. One step closer to your perfect day.

A small, diverse group of people (3-5 individuals) sitting in a loose circle outdoors at golden hour—could be a park, backyard, or peaceful urban space—engaged in warm, authentic conversation or shared silence, some with journals, some with hands open in receptive gesture
