We are living in the most psychologically manipulated era in history. Why? Because our brains are 200,000 years old, wired for a tribe of 150 people. Today, we face the judgment of millions via social media. The consequence? We perform. We hide. We wear costumes.

Chase describes this as the "Decorator Crab" effect. A decorator crab covers its shell with seaweed, shells, and debris to hide its true self. We do the same. We cover our vulnerability with personas, achievements, and fake opinions.

The result? A pandemic of loneliness. You can be in a room full of people, praised and liked, yet feel completely alone because no one knows the real you. They only know the costume. And deep down, you know it.

That disconnect is what Chase calls "Emotional Debt"—the exhausting cognitive tax of concealing who you really are.

Concealment is more mentally taxing than doing calculus. It drains your energy, spikes your cortisol, and keeps you in a state of low-grade survival mode.

Is brainwashing real? Yes. And it’s not just for spies. It’s the algorithm feeding your scroll. Chase breaks it down into the acronym F.E.A.R.

  • F – Focus: Novelty triggers the mammalian brain. A stick breaking in the woods. A shocking headline.

  • E – Emotion: Specifically, fractionation. Pulling you up with a cute baby deer video, then slamming you down with fear-based news. This up/down cycle increases suggestibility (theta waves).

  • A – Agitation: Disrupting your ability to predict the future. Creating chaos so you crave order.

  • R – Repetition: The cycle repeats until the behavior or belief becomes automatic.

Social media algorithms don’t need a "dark conference table" of villains. They just optimize for engagement. And nothing engages like fear, outrage, and the promise of simple answers to complex problems.

🏗️ Core Concept: Engineering Conditions (PCP)

If you want to influence ethically—to lead, to coach, to connect—you must stop chasing outcomes and start engineering Context.

Chase uses the formula PCP:

  1. Perception: How does the other person view the situation?

  2. Context: What does the environment say is "allowed" here?

  3. Permission: Based on that context, what do they feel permitted to do?

Example:

  • Bad Context (Judgment): "Why did you miss the deadline?" (Triggers defensiveness/concealment).

  • Engineered Context (Curiosity): "I know the timeline was tight. Most people would struggle with those resources. I’m not looking for blame; I’m looking for how we can support you better. What was the biggest hurdle?" (Triggers honesty/collaboration).

When you shift the context from Courtroom to Laboratory, you give people permission to tell the truth.


👁️ Reading the Body: Stress vs. Deception

There is no single "lie detector" gesture. But there is a reliable Stress Detector.

Look for Change from baseline.

  • Blink Rate: Average is 15/min. Under stress, it spikes to 80-90. Under deep focus, it drops to 2-5.

  • Artery Protection: Crossing arms, touching the neck, or the "fig leaf" posture (hands covering groin). These are unconscious attempts to protect vital areas when feeling threatened.

  • Lip Compression: Pressing lips together tightly. This is the brain’s first attempt to "withhold" information or emotion.
