Let me tell you what's actually happening in that silent negotiation.

It's not about who's talking the most. It's not about who's the smartest. It's not about who holds the highest title on paper.

It's about the frame.

A frame is the lens through which everyone in the room understands what's happening. It defines who matters, who has power, what the rules are, and—critically—how seriously you're going to be taken.

And here's the part that stopped me cold when I first understood it:

You are either creating the frame, or you're stepping into someone else's. There is no neutral ground.

Think about that for a second. Every interaction you've ever had—every meeting, every conversation, every social gathering—you were either leading or following. Either setting the terms or accepting someone else's.

The person whose frame wins isn't the loudest. Isn't the most charismatic. Isn't the highest paid.

The person whose frame wins is the one who believes in their version of reality the most—and reacts to everyone else the least.


The Four Pillars of Every Frame

This isn't just theory. This is backed by behavioral science and decades of research into how humans establish hierarchy and social order. Every frame has four pieces holding it together:

1. Expectation

Expectation is what people think is going to happen. It's the autopilot script running in their brain.

Walk into Starbucks: they expect you to order coffee. Walk into a sales call: they expect a pitch. Walk into a team meeting: they expect status updates.

Most people never challenge expectation. They follow the script.

But if you can gently disrupt that expectation—just slightly—you snap them out of autopilot. And that's your opening.

2. Belief

Belief is what someone assumes is true about the situation. It's their underlying conviction about how things work and who you are in relation to them.

3. Perception

R — Recognize & Run Out

It all starts here. Before you can control any frame, you have to recognize what's happening.

Next time you walk into a room—any room—just notice. Notice who's setting the tone. Notice who's reacting to whom. Notice the pace, the energy, the unspoken hierarchy.

A: Only if your intent is manipulation. Frame control at its highest level isn't about making others smaller—it's about being so fully yourself that others feel safe enough to be themselves too. The most powerful frames are the ones where everyone wins.
