Why Achieving Your Goals Keeps Leaving You Empty (And What Actually Fixes It)

Peter Sage rowed the Atlantic and survived a UK prison to prove one idea: the outer world never changes until the inner one does. Here's what he taught me.

WAKE UP! Awareness Brings Answers!

You hit the goal. The revenue number, the promotion, the body, the relationship — and for about 48 hours it feels incredible. Then it fades, and you're already eyeing the next one. If you've ever wondered why the finish line keeps moving on you, today's guest has an answer that will stop you cold.

I spent years chasing the next number thinking it would finally flip a switch inside me. New income goal, new title, new milestone — I hit every one of them, and every single time the feeling I was actually after showed up for about a day and then quietly left the building.

I kept blaming the goal. Turns out I was running the wrong race entirely.

"Every adversity carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit." — Napoleon Hill, as quoted by Peter Sage

Before you keep reading, hit play. Nothing I write captures this as clearly as watching it done.

That's the exact framework that ended my chase. Keep reading — here's exactly how it works.

🌤️ The Core Concept: Peter Sage's Framework, Broken All the Way Down

Peter Sage built this entire body of work around one line: outer world follows inner world, never the other way around. Everything below is his training — the reason this episode earned a spot in the archive.

The Four Levels of Consciousness (a model Sage traces to Michael Beckwith):

  • To Me (Victim): Life happens to you. The mantra is "everything happens to me." Blame feels good short-term because it earns sympathy and lets you skip the courage required to move.

  • By Me (Achiever): If anything good is going to happen, you're going to force it into existence through sheer will. Almost all of hustle culture and mainstream personal-growth content lives here.

  • Through Me (Flow): Life starts moving with far less friction — synchronicities increase, doors open, effort drops while results don't. Sage spends most of his career moving people from By Me into this level.

  • As Me (Oneness): Non-duality, the territory of spiritual masters. Sage is candid that this one is "above his pay grade" and stays focused on the By Me → Through Me shift instead.

The Moves Between Levels:

🔸 Victim → Achiever requires giving up blame for personal responsibility.

🔸 Achiever → Flow requires giving up the need for control for trust — specifically, believing you live in a friendly universe rather than a hostile one.

🟢 Friendly vs. Hostile Universe:

Borrowing from Einstein, Sage says the most useful question you can ever answer is whether you believe you live in a friendly or hostile universe. His refinement: it's actually neither — it's a self-reflecting universe. Two men behind the same prison bars; one sees mud, the other sees stars.

Same environment, different interpretation, different result.

🟡 Your Brain Is a Loop-Closer:

Sage compares the mind to a Labrador — throw it a question and it will fetch an answer, true or not. Ask "why am I not good enough?" and it'll dig up a reason just to close the loop.

The fix: ask better questions. Swap "why is this happening to me?" for "what can I learn from this?"

🔵 The Curse of the White Rabbit:

At a greyhound track, the dogs chase a mechanical rabbit they're designed to never catch — no amount of better training closes that gap. Replace greyhound with entrepreneur, rabbit with "the goal that will finally make me happy," and you have most people's relationship with success. Sage has coached people worth hundreds of millions of dollars still chasing the same feeling.

The goal was never the problem — the belief the feeling was parked at the finish line was.

A greyhound running full-stride at golden hour.

🟠 The Financial Thermostat:

Like a room thermostat, most people carry an internal income setpoint. Rise above it, and self-sabotage ("the air conditioning") quietly kicks in — fewer follow-up calls, mysteriously bad timing — until you drop back to the number you unconsciously believe you deserve.

This is why lottery winners so often end up broke again. Tying self-worth to net worth locks the loop in place.

🟣 Growth-Centric vs. Comfort-Centric:

Your nervous system is wired for comfort. If you identify primarily as your body, every challenge gets labeled a "problem." If you identify as the non-physical part of you — values, personality, purpose — the same events get labeled "opportunities."

Nature only does two things: grow, or get removed from the food chain.

🟢 GOOP (the Good Opinion of Other People):

You're the star of your own movie — the only person in every scene. Everyone else is either supporting cast or a film extra. You are almost certainly a film extra in their movie too.

Most people are too consumed managing their own bubble of self-importance to spend real energy judging yours.

🟡 Three Levels of Real Change:

Intellectual (it makes sense — changes nothing), Emotional (the penny drops — behavior shifts, but can relapse), and Identity (it becomes who you are — permanent). "A smoker who's quit" still fights willpower daily. "A non-smoker" declines without a second thought.

🔵 Context vs. Content:

Picture a glass of water. The water is the content of your life — job, money, relationships. The glass is the context — how you interpret it. Most people spend their whole lives changing the water while the glass never changes.

Change the glass, and the same water looks entirely different.

🚀 Solution: 5-Minute Audit — Find Your Level

Here's how to apply this in the next five minutes, today:

Minute 1 — Name the Goal:

Pick one goal you're currently chasing — revenue, a relationship milestone, a body goal. Write it down.

Minute 2 — Ask the Rabbit Question:

Be honest: if you hit this goal tomorrow, would the feeling last more than a few days? If you're not sure, that's your answer.

Minute 3 — Find Your Level:

Are you operating from "To Me" (this is happening to me), "By Me" (I will force this into existence), or "Through Me" (I'm allowing this, and doors are opening)? Most people chasing a goal hard right now are living in By Me.

Minute 4 — Give Up the Grip:

The move from By Me to Through Me isn't giving up the goal — it's giving up the need to control exactly how it arrives. Say it out loud: "I'm willing to let this come easier than I've been forcing it."

Minute 5 — Reclaim the Feeling Now:

Whatever you think hitting the goal will make you feel — capable, proud, calm — find one small way to feel that right now, before the goal lands. That's not delusion. That's rewiring the setpoint.

FAQ

Q: If I stop "forcing" my goals, won't I just get lazy and stop making progress?

A: No — Sage isn't saying quit taking action. He's saying quit believing the goal itself is what holds the feeling you're after. You still row, hustle, and build. You just stop white-knuckling every step and start noticing when things are actually flowing versus when you're fighting the current.

Q: This sounds like it only applies to entrepreneurs or spiritual types. What if I just want a normal, stable life?

A: The mechanism is universal. Whether the "rabbit" is a revenue number, a body weight, or a relationship status, the same trap applies: believing the feeling is parked at the finish line instead of available now.

Q: How do I know if I'm actually shifting levels, or just telling myself a nicer story?

A: Watch for friction. If you're still white-knuckling every outcome and resenting the process, you're still in By Me. If timing starts lining up and effort starts feeling lighter even when you're still working hard, that's Through Me showing up.

🌞 REAP Practical Application: The Rabbit Reframe

This is how we think. This is how we move. This is how we show up!

R — Recognize & Run Out:

Notice the old pattern: "I'll feel it once I hit the goal." Pause. Ask: has hitting past goals actually delivered that feeling for longer than a few days?

E — Exchange + Envision + Emotion:

Replace it with: "The feeling is available now — the goal is just where I get to keep proving it." Feel that land as relief, not resignation.

A — Activate with Action:

Run the 5-Minute Audit above on one active goal today. Name your level. Loosen your grip on the how.

P — Program & Prosper:

Use this inside your theta window — the first 5–10 minutes after waking, or the last 5–10 before sleep. Stack the reps. Presence becomes identity. Identity becomes reality.

"Neurons that fire together, wire together." — Donald Hebb

🚨 Critical Window: Your 5-Minute Theta Mornings ⚠️

The first 5–10 minutes after you wake up is neurological gold!! Your brain is still in a more receptive theta state — the exact window to feed your mind the level you actually want to operate from, instead of whatever the group chat throws at you first.

That's why I built the 5-Minute Theta Mornings Routine: no decisions, no overthinking, just a simple practice to program your mind for strength, presence, and purpose.

Finding your level fits into this same window — you're setting your operating frequency before the world hands you its own.

🌟 Synchronicity Check: If something lines up too easily today — a call you didn't chase, a door that opened on its own — that's not luck. That's Through Me showing up. Name it when you see it.

🏖️ The Bigger Vision

Perfect days are engineered. One decision. One behavior. One moment of awareness at a time.

You don't need a bigger goal to finally feel it.

You need to stop believing the feeling is on the other side of the finish line — because Sage rowed across an entire ocean and did six months in prison, and the feeling he was after was never waiting at either finish line. It was available the whole time.

This is the mission: Awareness → REAP → Repetition → Identity → Reality.
